Our beloved client American Standard came to us with a new challenge: Develop a way of introducing the concept of shower toilets to the Western & Asian markets who aren’t familiar with the product.
What we did
Because of the subject matter, we played it tongue in cheek and developed a new character: Dr Bidet — our Japanese shower toilet sensei who is here to answer all shower-toilet related questions — all housed within an micro-site that educated & informed different markets about the innovation behind this rather wonderful tradition.
We set up one entire day of production with our partners over at Madmen studios to film our talent. It took many takes, lots of McDonalds delivery and a huge effort in setting up a shower toilet without plumbing, but we came away with some fantastic expressions.
We developed a logotype that symbolises what it meant to Love Spalet and be obvious enough so that it was recognisable among many translations. It would be used across all online & offline collateral. Is it a heart, or is it an upside down bum? Your choice.
The concept of the site was centered in the one thing that really made the product magical. The feeling. We wanted to capture the moment users had when they used the shower toilet for the first time. We filmed six people from diverse backgrounds actually using the toilet, most of whom had never used one before. Of course this presented some logistical challenges, making sure each participant had privacy while… being sprayed. Their expressions were the focal point of the website - truly a “Love at first touch” moment.
Because the very idea of a shower toilet is seen as foreign — or even taboo — within some emerging markets, we felt it necessary to give it a human personality to ease the tension. A character or mascot that politely and humorously presented the concept in a way that was authentically Japanese. We constructed an interactive timeline that featured Dr Bidet telling the story of the shower toilet & why it’s a worthy investment.

It was important to show the tech behind the product, so we appended a section to the end of the timeline that showcased some whiz-bang features to boast about. Among them, a deodoriser. This really is a toilet that washes, dries & makes the room smell nice afterward.
The stakeholders wanted the site to showcase the cultural history of the shower toilet, so we developed a historical timeline to feature key checkpoints in the product development.
Because no product is complete without real world examples, we developed an area to showcase where the spalet has been built into world class apartments, off buildings & hotels.
Several of the shower toilet were featured on the site, along with a product survey which evaluated your requirements & found your perfect shower toilet.
